Grief is a natural emotion. While the event that caused the grief is devistating and a result of loss at some level, one must realize that healthy grief reaction is important to recovery. The nature of the emotion allows one to mentally heal and focus on the loss. It allows one to ponder and reflect on the loss and find solutions to it. This natural defense is critical to recovery. However, while one is pondering it gives a social sign to others via tears and frowns that one needs help. This evolutionary device to attract help from others is essential when someone needs a helping hand. While grief can take on many pathological forms, healthy grief generally subsides within six months and allows the person to readjust and adapt to the new loss. This does not mean one forgets, it merely means one adjusts in a healthy fashion.
